The purpose of the study was to determine how often sonography discloses the diseases in other organs in patients with suspected acute appendicitis. We reviewed the clinical, surgical, and sonographic findings in 88 patients who were suspected of
but
proven not to have acute appendicitis, and in 4 patients in whom acute appendicitis had been erroneously diagnosed for other diseases on sonography. Of the total 92 patients, 29 patients had other system diseases such as gynecological diseases
(n=10),
renal diseases (n=8), bowel or mesenteric diseases (n=7), and cholecystitis (n=4) : among them, 22 patients were correctly diagnosed by sonography In the rest of 59 patients, symptoms were relieved without any specific diagnosis being made during
the
hospital course. The study indicates that sonography is useful in establishing alternative diagnoses in patients undergoing sonography for suspected acute appendicitis.
